Mechanical Earth Anchors for Crib Wall Stabilisation

09/02/2021

Crib walls are a common sight across the UK, as they're designed to contain sloping land and keep the site safe for a variety of uses. Crib walls can be found everywhere from private estates and leisure facilities to areas that contain public footpaths, cycling routes, residential and agricultural buildings, and especially next to busy roads and motorways.

Though a crib wall's primary purpose is to retain land in place, they often become unstable over time. This can be due to decades of soil erosion, vibrations from heavy traffic, the age of the wall, or simply its initial construction falling short of modern standards. Whatever the case, Condor Projects specialises in designing, manufacturing and installing mechanical earth anchors for securing existing crib walls, which is much faster and more affordable than demolishing the wall and replacing it with a new one.

How do mechanical earth anchors work?

Mechanical earth anchors from Condor Projects are specifically designed to counterbalance the active ground pressures that can cause a crib wall to lose integrity. Over the years we've perfected our mechanical earth anchors to ensure complete peace of mind, with the design and installation of the system following a clear process:

  • Our geotechnical engineers visit your site to analyse the crib wall and determine how deep the anchors need to be placed.
  • We then design and manufacture mechanical earth anchors to perfectly suit your requirements. This is done in our own workshop and the anchors are constructed from either mild steel with a galvanised coating or fully stainless steel.
  • Once the mechanical earth anchors are ready, we agree on a timeframe for putting them in place. This involves driving the anchors into the ground at a precise depth.
  • A tensile load is then applied to the tendons, which results in the anchors rotating and locking into place beneath the ground's surface.
  • Finally, the exposed ends of the mechanical earth anchors are sealed into position.

The benefits of mechanical earth anchors

Aside from being designed around the exact specifications of your crib wall, mechanical earth anchors don't require grouting, making them a more natural and less disruptive solution for crib wall stabilisation. This also makes them an eco-friendly solution, as mechanical earth anchors are a completely dry system.

Mechanical earth anchors bring instant results, keeping the soil and other ground materials in place as soon as they're installed. They're also a long-term solution, as our anchors are designed to last either 60 or 120 years, making them an effective means of safely stabilising a crib wall for generations.
